Britain for Family Historians

Britain is not a one country but four - England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. A person is British if they come from one of those countries.

Until recently all were governed centrally, with representatives (called Members of the British Parliament) meeting in a building called the House of Commons in London.

Now all, except England, have their own governments and, as a result of this, many family history and genealogy records have been moved from England to the countries where the people lived when the records were created. You can find contact details for the records offices in each country here

Britain is divided into administrative areas called Counties. Counties are very important to family historians as many of the original records are kept at local County Records Offices with only copies being held centrally.
